KAT VON D- SHADE AND LIGHT PALETTE.

The shade and light palette (pictured above) is described as ‘an exclusive contour palette denaturing three shades for contouring and three shades for highlighting, designed to shape and define facial features to create a look of authentic dimensionality.’-Sephora. It is sold in stores for around £35.

As you can see from the image above the palette comes in a matte black casing with a magnetic fastening which I find very sleek and practical as you don’t have to worry about it opening and getting damaged. The only problem I have with this packaging is that it is quite large and bulky which isn’t convenient if you’re moving from place to place or travelling as I find it takes up the majority of my makeup bag.

INTERIOR
The shade and light palette comes with a built in mirror which I love because personally I never have a compact mirror to hand. As I mentioned earlier the packaging is slightly bulky but this also means that you get a decent sized mirror, so depending on your preference this could be a positive or negative. Personally having the bigger mirror outweighs the fact that the palette is on the larger side but again this does depend on what you prefer.

THE SHADES
The shade and light palette consists of a top row of matte highlighting shades and a bottom row of matte contour shades. The shades are all a powder consistency and are extremely pigmented so a little goes a long way, each shade is unique which means you are definitely getting your moneys worth when it comes to variety. For highlights left to right we have Lucid (Neutral), Lyric (Yellow toned) and Levitation (Pink toned), and for the contour shades from left to right we have Sombre (Cool toned), Shadowplay (Warm toned) and Subconscious (Dark cool toned) all of which are beautiful and you will find at least one of them will compliment your skin tone. The only issue I have with the shades is that you cannot buy them separately, you can only buy the palette as a whole which I find a problem as I tend to stick to using the same two colours (Lyric and Sombre.) Essentially this means that you are splurging on a palette and may only use a couple of shades which is something you need to keep in mind when spending this amount of money. However the shades could also be used as eyeshadows which they are also beautiful for, so even if you don’t use all the shades for your contour and highlight there are other uses for them.

Above are swatches I provided of the highlight and contour shades. For highlights left to right we have Levitation, Lyric and Lucid and for the contour shades we have Subconcious, Shadowplay and Sombre.

APPLICATION
On application I personally prefer to use a brush such as eco tools stippling brush as the shades are a powder so I find brushes give a better blend. The shades themselves blend out beautifully and rather than looking like you have contoured to high heaven it genuinely looks natural like the shadows on your face. The lasting power for this contour is amazing, I have combination skin and don’t even have to touch up my makeup during the day when using this, however this may differ from person to person.

OVERALL THOUGHTS
So after weighing up all the pros and cons the big question is would I recommend this palette and would I re purchase? The answer is yes without a doubt. Yes this palette may be a splurge if you only use a couple of shades but who cares when it looks so beautiful on the skin? This is honestly the perfect contour palette and I could not praise it enough. If you're looking for a natural contouring palette with long lasting power this palette is for you, its great for beginners and experts and gives a subtle yet gorgeous structure to your face.
